Volleyball Suffers First Loss of Season

HONOLULU - The 17th-ranked Santa Clara University volleyball team dropped its first game of the season, falling to third-ranked UCLA in three games tonight as part of the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Volleyball Challenge, hosted by the University of Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. Junior Toni Muratore led the Broncos with 12 kills in the 30-23, 32-30, 30-24 loss. Santa Clara is now 3-1 on the season, while UCLA improves to 5-0.

The defensive battle saw the team's respective Liberos shine, as the Bruins' Chrissie Zartman posted 24 digs, and freshman Caroline Walters notched 21 digs for the Broncos.

SCU freshman Crystal Matich and junior Cassie Perret added to the defensive efforts, notching 13 and 11 digs, respectively. As a team, the Broncos out-blocked UCLA 12-9, led by freshman Anna Cmaylo's six.

The Broncos were also aided by nine kills from sophomore Kim McGiven.

UCLA was led by Heather Cullen's 10 kills, and Becky Green added nine. As a team, the Bruins held Santa Clara to a .096 hitting percentage.

Santa Clara will continue at the Challenge through the weekend, and will return to the court Friday against No. 13 Hawaii and will follow against Southwest Missouri State on Saturday.
