SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's volleyball team defeated the University of San Diego by a score of 3-1 Saturday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the USD campus. With the win the 14th-ranked Broncos improve to 17-8 overall and 8-2 in West Coast Conference play while dropping 18th-ranked San Diego to 17-8 overall, 6-4 in league play.
Santa Clara's win is its third this season over a ranked opponent, two of which have been San Diego. The win also gives the Broncos their third straight season sweep of the Toreros, and seventh win in their last eight meetings dating back to 1999.
The Broncos currently sit alone in second place in the WCC standings as Pepperdine defeated Loyola Marymount in five games at LMU, giving Pepperdine a two-game lead on Santa Clara in the league standings. Loyola Marymount is now three games back while USD is four games out of first place.
Becky Potter posted a team-high 23 kills for the Broncos to go along with a .457 hitting percentage while teammate Toni Muratore chipped in with 18 kills and Cassie Perret added 10. Kelli Sousa dished out 57 assists while Alyssa Lantz notched a match-high 14 digs and Becky Biniek registered a match-high six block assists to lead the SCU defense.
Devon Forster was one of four USD players with double-digit kills, as her 29 were a match-high, but her 13 hitting errors were also a match-high. Ryan Maspero posted the only double-double for San Diego with her 13 kills and 12 digs, while Lindsey Sherburne posted a match-high 64 assists in guiding the Torero offense.
Santa Clara returns to the Bay Area next weekend for a pair of matches at Saint Mary's on Friday, November 14 and at San Francisco on Saturday, November 15. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
