Volleyball Tops Portland in Seventh Sweep in Eight Matches

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Santa Clara volleyball team defeated Portland in straight games tonight at the Pat Malley Center.
Santa Clara's record improves to 19-2 on the season, 7-1 in the WCC. The Pilots fall to 6-15 overall, 2-6 in league action.
The win marked the seventh sweep for the Broncos in their last eight matches. Game scores were 15-8, 15-9, 15-4.
Freshman Becky Potter posted a team-high 18 kills on the night to lead all attackers, hitting .481. Freshman Jessie Mechem added a career-high 15 kills. The Broncos were led defensively by sophomore Chrissy Hirsch's 12 digs, while senior Ynez Carrasco added 10. Potter added three blocks.
Anna Abatzoglou led Portland with 10 kills and three blocks, while Bridget Beschen posted 12 digs.
As a team, Santa Clara outhit Portland .378 to .190.
The Broncos remain at home and host Gonzaga on Saturday, Oct. 28. The match will begin at 7 p.m. at the Pat Malley Center.
