Volleyball Sweeps WCC Rival USF

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The 17th-ranked Santa Clara volleyball team earned its ninth straight victory, sweeping West Coast Conference opponent USF tonight at War Memorial Gym.
The 15-10, 17-15, 15-9 victory improves the Broncos' record to 14-1 overall, 3-0 in the WCC. USF falls to 9-5, 1-2 in league play. Santa Clara now leads the all-time series 27-4.
USF battled the Broncos to the end and actually out-hit SCU .223-.190, but Santa Clara senior outside hitter Ynez Carrasco pounded a match-high 25 kills on .304 hitting and senior setter Roz Pelayo dished out 66 assists in the two hour match. Senior middle hitter Laura Tinetti downed 16 kills for the Lady Dons, while sophomore middle blocker Teresa Russell added an 11-kill, 12-dig double-double performance to go along with five blocks.
Senior middle blocker Brook Terhune and freshman outside hitter Becky Potter each added 12 kills for Santa Clara. The Broncos entered the match leading the nation in kills per game (18.76) and blasted 32 in the second set. For comparison, USF tallied 31 kills combined in games one and two.
After playing the team's first 15 matches on the road, the Broncos will host their first home match of the season Sunday night against George Mason in a non-conference matchup. That event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Pat Malley Center.
