TUCSON, Ariz. -

Santa Clara's volleyball team lost its first match of the season, falling to No. 14 Arizona this afternoon at the Starwoods Plaza Classic, hosted at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz.

With the loss, Santa Clara falls to 5-1. The team was looking to match the program high of six straight wins, established in 1979, but still celebrates the best season start since 1983, when the Broncos went 4-0.

The Wildcats improve to 5-1.

Santa Clara was led for the second straight match by freshman Jessie Mechem, who led all attackers with 13 kills. Jami Bari added 12 kills.

Today's match concluded a four-match road trip, over five days, with three ranked opponents on the schedule. The Broncos swept No. 11 Pacific on Tuesday and No. 19 Baylor and New Mexico State yesterday afternoon.

Santa Clara returns to California to play at CS Sacramento Tues., Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
