Volleyball Sweeps Weekend With Defeat of Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. - Santa Clara's Jessie Mechem and Amy Kohl posted 13 kills apiece to pace the 18th-ranked Santa Clara volleyball team to its eighth straight victory, sweeping West Coast Conference opponent Portland tonight in the Chiles Center.

The 15-4,15-7, 15-5 victory improves the Broncos' record to 13-1 overall, 2-0 in the WCC. Portland falls to 5-8, 1-1 in league play.

Santa Clara out-hit Portland, .287 to .101, and held the advantage at the net, outblocking the Pilots, 9-5. Mechem added a match-high 20 digs for the Broncos.

In continuing WCC action, Santa Clara travels to USF for an Oct. 7 contest that will begin at 7 p.m. The following night, Sat., Oct. 8, the Broncos will host their first home match of the season when George Mason arrives for a non-conference matchup. That event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Pat Malley Center.
