TUCSON, Ariz. - Santa Clara's volleyball team swept its second straight ranked opponent, defeating No. 19 Baylor this afternoon at the Starwoods Plaza Classic, hosted at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz.
Santa Clara won 15-7, 15-13, 15-13, posting 23 kills and a .437 hitting percentage in the first frame. Baylor was up 13-11 in the final two games, but each time, Santa Clara pulled out the win.
Santa Clara improves to 4-0, marking the best season-opening record in 17 years, matching the 1983's squad's 4-0 start. In 1979, Santa Clara began its season with six straight wins, a program best.
Baylor falls to 5-1, its 15-match winning streak ended by the Broncos. On Tuesday, Santa Clara defeated No. 11 Pacific in three games, ending the Tigers' own 15-match winning streak at home.
Santa Clara is now 3-0 all-time against the Bears, dropping just one game in the series.
The Broncos continue play at the Starwoods Plaza Classic, taking on New Mexico State this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The tournament will conclude tomorrow afternoon with Santa Clara playing host Arizona, ranked 14th, at 2 p.m.
