Volleyball Defeats New Mexico State

TUCSCON, Ariz. - Santa Clara's volleyball team swept its second opponent of the day, defeating New Mexico State this evening at the Starwoods Plaza Classic, hosted at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz.
Santa Clara improves to 5-0, marking the best season-opening record in 17 years, surpassing the 1983's squad's 4-0 start. In 1979, Santa Clara began its season with six straight wins, a program best.
Santa Clara won 15-12, 15-4, 15-2, with freshman Jessie Mechem leading all attackers with 11 kills. Junior Jami Bari added 10 kills for the Broncos while junior Merrin Thompson added six service aces. Defensively for the Broncos, freshman Becky Potter posted six blocks.
With the loss, the Aggies drop to 2-4.
Earlier in the day, the Broncos upset 19th-ranked Baylor in three games.
The Broncos conclude play at the Starwoods Plaza Classic tomorrow afternoon against host Arizona, ranked 14th, at 2 p.m.
