Santa Clara Tennis Helps Raise $2000 For Cancer Research

June 25, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - For the second straight summer, the Santa Clara men's and women's tennis programs hosted the United States Tennis Association's Northern California Sectionals at the Degheri Tennis Center. This year, the Broncos help to raise close to $2,000 for the American Cancer Society during the week long event that was held from June 16-22.

"We were really honored to once again host the biggest juniors tournament in Northern California," said men's tennis head coach Derek Mills. "Not only did we get to see all of the top juniors, but it was great that we could raise the funds for the American Cancer Society at the same time. Hopefully, we'll be able to continue to host this tournament and support cancer research for years to come."

The tennis programs decided to donate 100% of the money from the event to the American Cancer Society in support of Jason Scalese, the tennis coach at Archbishop Mitty High School and the tournament's director. Scalese, a friend and supporter of Bronco tennis, had a former player battle cancer.

"Jason did a phenomenal job setting up and running a first class tournament," said Mills. "All of the feedback we received was incredible and we thank him for all his hard work and dedication to the USTA and Santa Clara tennis."
