MORAGA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team concluded play at the Saint Mary's College Invitational at conference opponent Saint Mary's College this past weekend. Bronco newcomer, Kelly Buckley had a standout weekend for Santa Clara, as the SCU transfer won the Singles Blue Bracket. Buckley, who went through three opponents to reach the finals, and breezed by University of Nevada, Reno's Katarina Huba, 6-4, 6-0, in the finals.

"It was great for Kelly to get a good result this past weekend," said head coach Ben Cabell. "It really adds to the momentum we are trying to create in building a successful run this season."

Ashley Pane, who participated in her first fall tournament of the 2008-09 campaign, made it to the finals in the White Singles Bracket, but fell to the University of Washington's Samantha Smith 6-0, 6-0. Pane's solid weekend for the Broncos also included a trip to the White Doubles Bracket finals, with partner Stephanie Galainena. The pair easily defeated UC Davis' Jenna Kappel and Jessica Harris, 8-3, in the semifinals, but could not outmatch Saint Mary's pairing of Erin Young and Molly Aloia, as they concluded play falling 8-6.

Buckley, who also partnered with Kacie Wagner in doubles landed in the consolation finals. The SCU pair outplayed the University of Portland's Anna Gullickson and Stefani Doolittle, 8-4, to earn a final doubles win.

Kimi Cox, who competed in the Blue Singles Bracket consolation rounds, defeated UC Davis' Jenna Kappel 6-1, 6-0. Cox then paired with Carmen Pham, who was a last minute addition to the weekends play replacing an under the weather, Isabelle Hoy, advanced to the finals in Blue Doubles Bracket on Saturday. The doubles team fought hard against a talented Reno pairing of Aodhnait Lombard and Shannon Cassidy, but could not get the advantage and fell 8-4.

The Broncos resume action on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the ITA Regionals hosted at Stanford University.
