Final Stats

SAN DIEGO - Santa Clara University's tennis team defeated West Coast Conference rival Loyola Marymount 30-25 in overtime this morning for 11th place at the 2001 World TeamTennis National Collegiate Tennis Championships, held this weekend at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Oklahoma State beat defending champion South Alabama 27-20 in today's final. The Championships, administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State, is the third-ever co-ed intercollegiate national tennis championship at the Division I level. WTT co-founder Billie Jean King was on hand all weekend.

The teams used the WTT format at these national championships. The team tennis concept, originated by King, features teams comprised of at least two men, two women and a coach. Each team match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. The WTT format features fan-friendly rules such as cumulative scoring, substitution, overtime and supertiebreakers.

As the governing body of collegiate tennis the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA administers numerous regional and national championships, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, presented by the USTA, and the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings for men's and women's tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels.
