April 19, 2002
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's tennis team opened the 2002 West Coast Conference Championships with a 6-1 victory over Saint Mary's this afternoon at the SCU Tennis Center. With the win, the Broncos improve to 13-8 on the season. The Gaels move to 10-12. The Broncos--seeded third--will play second-seed Loyola Marymount in the second round on Saturday at noon. The Lions defeated San Diego 6-1 in first round action earlier today. Top-seeded Pepperdine opened the tournament with a 6-1 win over Gonzaga, and will play the winner of the San Francisco-Portland match. Doubles was closely contested between the teams, with SCU freshman Janalle Kaloi and junior Mariko Kawakami rallying from a 3-6 deficit on court two to clinch the doubles point for the Broncos with a 9-7 win over Catalina Fillol and Megan Schulman. On the first singles court, junior Christine Limbers needed five match points to close out her victory over Saint Mary's Valerie Verrier. Kaloi clinched the team victory with her 6-4, 6-0 win on court two. It marked her 20th singles victory of the season. Saint Mary's earned its sole point of the afternoon at No. 3 singles. Bronco senior Nicole McCord rallied for four straight game victories to win her first set 6-3, but opponent Megan Schulman held on for the come-from-behind victory.
