Limbers Named WCC Women's Tennis Player of the Year
April 13, 2003
MALIBU, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's tennis senior Christine Limbers was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, in a vote conducted by league coaches at the conference championship this weekend in Malibu. She becomes the first to garner such an honor in SCU women's tennis history. "I think it's also the first time in history a player not competing in the championship match has been given this honor," head coach Aby Ryan said. "It's a testament to how awesome a player and a person Christine is." Limbers, a native of Carefree, Ariz., has led the Broncos the past four seasons at the top singles and doubles spots. She finishes her career with the most combined doubles victories in program history, and third all-time in singles victories. Limbers was named first team All-WCC in singles and doubles, as played the entire season with sophomore Janalle Kaloi. "Getting this honor is just icing on the cake," said Limbers. "I'm more excited that other coaches and teams are recognizing the talent that we have been improving on the past few years. It's wonderful to see the respect they have for our program in terms of this honor." The Broncos, seeded fourth in this year's tournament, were to play for third place this afternoon against the No. 2 seed, LMU. Rain forced the cancellation of the match, and Santa Clara and the Lions will share third-place honors this year. That finish matches last year's historic third place honor, as it was the first time the Broncos had finished that high in the league championship. Pepperdine was the host of this year's Championship, with the matches being played at the Ralph-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. The Broncos finish the season with a 10-10 record.
Pepperdine and San Diego will play today for the WCC title, as the winner will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship. Portland and San Francisco tied for fifth while Saint Mary's and Gonzaga tied for seventh place.
Limbers is joined on the All-WCC singles first team by seniors Penka Fileva and Edit Pakay of Loyola Marymount, freshman Natalie Braverman and junior Charlotte Vernaz of Pepperdine and freshman Emma Murphy of San Diego. The All-WCC doubles first team included Fileva and freshman Patrycia Hubl of LMU and senior Monika Horvath and Vernaz of Pepperdine. Braverman was tabbed the WCC Freshman of the Year, while Hilary Somers of San Francisco was honored as the Coach of the Year.
