Women's Tennis: Sunday Results of Saint Mary's Invitational
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team wrapped up the final day of the Saint Mary's Invitational in Moraga, Calif. on Sunday with Bronco senior Katie Le winning the top singles draw and taking the championship of the top doubles draw with partner Daniella Silva.
Next up for the Broncos: the team will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament next weekend in Palo Alto, Calif. on Oct. 18-22. This will be the third tournament of the 2013-14 preseason.
"Winning the tournament last weekend really gives me confidence going into regionals this weekend at Stanford," said Le, who is ranked No. 20 by ITA. "Even though I was the No. 1 seed going in, I knew I would have to play well in order to win. I definitely need to sharpen up my forehand and serve before this weekend, but I've been very happy with my performance so far."
Seeded No. 1 overall in the Saint Mary's Invitational, Le reached the semifinal match were she met No. 3 seed Ellen Tsay of Stanford. The Milpitas, Calif. native trumped Tsay in two quick sets, 6-2, 6-3, capturing a spot in the final match later that afternoon.
In the championship of the red singles draw, Le faced another tough Stanford opponent Caroline Doyle. Le took the first set, 6-4, solidifying her dominance. In the second set, Doyle put up a fight, but Le kept her momentum up and captured the championship, 6-4, 7-6(3).
In doubles, partners Le and Silva met Aishwarya Agrawal and Claire Yang of Fresno State in the championship match of the red doubles draw. Agrawal and Yang were no match for the Broncos, and Le and Silva swept them, 8-0.
This weekend, the Broncos head up to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the ITA Regional's from Oct. 18-22.
