Women's Tennis Falls to Pepperdine In the Semifinals of the WCC Championships

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The third-seeded Santa Clara women's tennis team fell to the No. 2 seed Pepperdine Waves in the semifinals of the 2013 West Coast Conference Tennis Championships Friday. The Broncos end the 2013 season with an overall record of 12-10 and a program's best 8-2 conference record, clinching a share in the WCC regular season title.

"We had a really close and good battle. I thought the team fought really hard and played well especially in singles," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "Overall we performed better this year than last year, so our expectations will continue to rise going into next season. The effort the girls put into this season and this tournament was phenomenal."

Against No. 2 Pepperdine, Santa Clara was unable to capture the doubles point. On Court 1, Khunpak Issara and Megan Moore of the Waves upended partners Katie Le and Jessica Agra by a score of 8-3. Stephanie Skaras and Delphine Rouvillois were next off Court 3 after Lorraine Guillermo and Denielle Feneridis defeated them, 8-2. With two matches decided for Pepperdine, the final doubles match went unfinished.

In the singles competition, the Broncos needed to tally four individual victories to advance to the Championship match. In the end, Stephanie Skaras and Katie Le were the only two wins for Santa Clara. At the No. 6 position, Skaras took her opponent Denielle Feneridis in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. On Court 1, Le battled through two long sets to overtake Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine. Le took the first set, 6-4. The second set was decided in a tiebreaker, ending in Le's favor 7-6(9).

Rouvillois and Chelby Cooke were close in their efforts to attempt to take two more matches from Pepperdine. Rouvillois dropped the first set to Michaela Capannolo by a score of 6-4. She kept the second set tight, but Capannolo pulled it out, 7-6. Cooke was able to push her match into a third set, but with Rouvillois's loss on Court 5, the semifinal match was already decided by WCC Championship rules.

The Broncos will return to the Mission Campus with a co-WCC regular season Championship, a No. 58 national ranking, and the best conference record in Santa Clara women's tennis program history.

All eyes will be on No. 28 Le and her hopes to qualify for her second consecutive NCAA Singles Tournament in May. Bids come out next week.

The WCC Tournament Championships will take place Saturday in San Diego, Calif. at 9:30 a.m. between No. 1 Saint Mary's and No. 2 Pepperdine. Check the WCC Tennis Tournament Central here for updates and results.
