SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 58 Santa Clara women's tennis team enters its last official competition of the 2013 season this weekend before the West Coast Conference Championships, which begin on April 24. The three-match road trip consists of WCC opponents Gonzaga on Fri., April 19 and Portland on Sat., April 20. After these two matches, Santa Clara will play nonconference team No. 70 Oregon on Sun., April 21.
The Broncos (9-8; 5-1 WCC) are coming off of two exciting upsets over then-No. 53 USD on April 6, 6-1, and No. 40 Saint Mary's on April 7, 4-3. They are tied for the second best record in the WCC with Pepperdine behind Saint Mary's who is 7-1 in WCC.
No. 28 Katie Le had a stand out match on April 7 against No. 40 Saint Mary's. Deciding the day's overall match, Le was up against No. 17 Jenny Jullien, who had beat Le, 7-5, 6-3, in the Cal Winter Invite on Jan. 18. The Milpitas, Calif. native was able to get ahead and take the first set, 7-5. Jullien fired back in the second set and led Le at one point 3-1. Le battled back in the second to make it 6-6. The singles match and the overall team match was decided in a tiebreaker, ending in Le's favor 7-4. Le is now 4-4 against ranked players this season.
The Zags drop to 9-10 overall and 0-5 in West Coast Conference matches after losing to BYU by a score of 4-3 on April 13. In addition to Santa Clara on Fri., April 19, Gonzaga also hosts USF on Sat., April 20 at 11:00 a.m. Freshman Samantha Polayes won her 20th match of the season against BYU to set a Gonzaga University women's tennis program record for wins in a season. The Zags have not yet won a WCC match this dual season.
The Pilot's West Coast Conference struggles continue as the team fell to 1-4 with an 8-11 mark in the WCC after a 5-2 loss against Pepperdine on April 6. Portland hosts USF on Fri., April 19 before the Broncos on Saturday. The Pilot's lone WCC win comes from a 6-1 victory over Gonzaga on March 9.
No. 70 Oregon
Recently, the Ducks lost a 5-2 match at home on Sunday afternoon against No. 5 USC. The Ducks move to 12-10 overall and 1-9 in Pac-12 play. Oregon has lost the last 9 of 11 matches after starting off its season very strongly. They have played for other WCC competitors and have come out on top in each of those matches. Santa Clara will be the Ducks last regular season match of 2013 before the Pac-12 Championships.
