FLUSHING, N.Y. - Santa Clara women's tennis star, No. 41 Katie Le, grabbed a hard-fought upset victory over No. 26 Zoe De Bruycker of North Carolina at the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y.
After cruising to a 6-3 win in the first set, No. 26 De Bruycker surged back. At one point in the second set, Le was down 2-1 before rallying back to pick up the victory, 6-4.
Le, the reining West Coast Conference Player of the Year, will continue on in the ITA Indoor and will battle sixth-seeded Hanna Mar of Duke at 10:30 a.m. Pacific Friday. Mar is currently ranked No. 35 in the ITA singles rankings.
"Katie played awesome in the first round," said Bronco women's tennis coach Ben Cabell. "She had to take some time off due to injury, but today she played at pretty much 100 percent. She has a chance to go really deep into this tournament now. Katie will Hanna Mar of Duke and Hanna could be one of the top 10 or 15 players in the country by the end of the year. This will be great test for Katie. Physically she looks good and she is playing well so it should be a really good match."
Last season Le was the first player to receive an individual bid to the NCAA singles championships. During her two previous seasons Le has amassed a total of 41 wins. She was tabbed as the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year in 2010-11 and last year was First Team All-WCC.
