Broncos Come From Behind To Beat Marquette 4-3
March 19, 2010
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -
The Santa Clara women's tennis team started its match against Marquette on the right note today, but dropped three consecutive singles matches before clawing back to beat the Golden Eagles, 4-3, today at the Degheri Tennis Center.
The sophomore pairing of Kimmi Cox and and Kacie Wagner put the Broncos in the advantage after taking care of Marquette's duo of Maggie Wilson and Olga Fischer, 8-2, but the Golden Eagles fired back, taking the No. 1 doubles match, 8-4, over freshman Alex Zaniewski and junior Carmen Pham. Freshmen Maggie McGeorge and Kelly Lamble sealed the doubles point for Santa Clara with a victory at No. 3, beating Gillian Hush and Paola Calderon, 8-4.
The Broncos nearly let the contest slip away though, falling in three-straight matches at the No. 5, No. 4, and No. 1 singles spots, but battled back against the odds to win the match. Lamble defeated Fischer in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 2 and freshmen Jessica Agra recovered from losing her second set to defeat Gillian Hush, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, setting up the deciding point at No. 3.
Sophomore Kacie Wagner came up big when it mattered most, outlasting Kelly Barry 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, to clinch the match for Santa Clara.
"This was a huge win for us," said head coach Ben Cabell. "We didn't get much practice this week with it being final exams. Marquette is a very good team but we played tough and showed a lot of heart. We're not 100% either and have a few injuries we are dealing with. I am really proud of the way the girls competed and in the end that was the difference. This match gives us a lot of confidence going forward and the girls should feel good about it. The confidence we get from this match will also help us in the long run in what's already turning out to be our best season in a while."
The Broncos, now 10-3 on the season, return to the court on March 27 to take on UC Riverside in a home doubleheader with the men's team.
