SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Santa Clara women's tennis team will cross their fingers for clear skies tomorrow as they prepare to take on Cal State Bakersfield tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos will then begin WCC match play at San Francisco on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Last weekend, Santa Clara was unable to play their contest against UC Santa Cruz due to inclement weather and are itching to get on the court for the first match of the season. "We're very excited about this weekend and we're looking to complete our first match of the year after last week's rain-out," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "We have a very young team this year so it will be an interesting match to watch and see what we can do."
The Roadrunners are 0-1 this season after losing their season opener against Cal Poly, 7-0. The Dons will open their season against Santa Clara.
Out of the two matches this weekend, the Broncos are looking forward to a heated battle against USF. In the WCC 2010 Preseason Poll, the Dons were predicted to place fourth in the league, while Santa Clara was predicted to finish fifth.
For Cabell, those close rankings are only more motivation for the team to come out strong and play hard against USF. "We've always had close matches with them in the past, so our team is really fired up. The Dons have a very similar team to last season, but we feel that we're a lot stronger this year and we'll have the edge."
