Women's Tennis Competes in Cal Poly Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team competed in the Cal Poly Invitational from Nov. 14-16. The three day tournament included conference rival University of San Francisco, UC Santa Barbara and hosts Cal Poly. Each team faced each other in a round robin series in both singles and doubles. Sophomore Carmen Pham posted a win in singles and two in doubles, and earned the Broncos' lone singles victory on day one versus Asagi Onaga of Santa Barbara, 7-6, 6-4.
In day two of action, Courtney Hull defeated Cal Poly's Shannon Brady in three sets. After falling 2-6 in the first set, Hull came back to earn the match with 6-2 and 10-6 wins in the concluding sets. Isabelle Hoy breezed by Santa Barbara's Sofia Novak, 6-2, 6-2.
Pham and partner Kacie Wagner, who fell in their first doubles match, concluded the invitational with wins on both day two and day three. The Pham-Wagner duo outplayed San Francisco's Andrea Gaitan and Sarah Oudomvilay for an 8-3 victory. The following day, they concluded the weekend's competition with an 8-2 win over UCSB's Natalia Lozano and Bryanna Ojeda.
Santa Clara concludes the fall tournament schedule and will resume play in 2009 for the dual season. The Broncos open up the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 17, versus UC Santa Cruz at noon.
