SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team returns to the court after starting the season, 1-0, to host Cal Baptist on Thursday, January 22, at 2 p.m., and No. 75 Cal Poly on Friday, January 23, at 11 a.m. Led by seniors Myra Davoudi and Stephanie Galainena, the Broncos look to use the momentum from their decisive, 7-0, win over UC Santa Cruz last Saturday to have a successful two days of non-conference play.
"Coming off a strong season opener, I think we definitely have confidence going into the next two matches," said head coach Ben Cabell. "Both Cal Baptist and Cal Poly are strong squads and will pose a challenge for us, but if we can stay composed and play our game we will see successful results."
Last Time Out
The Broncos blasted by UC Santa Cruz, 7-0, in their first match of the 2009 dual season, to post their first sweep of the year. Freshman Kacie Wagner was the only newcomer to play in the Santa Clara lineup both in singles and doubles. In singles, at the No. 4 spot, Wagner defeated the Banana Slugs Chrissy Nichol in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 3 position in doubles, Wagner teamed up with All-WCC sophomore Carmen Pham. The duo easily defeated UCSC's Chloe McHugh and Rebecca Parker, 8-1.
Scouting Cal Baptist
The Cal Baptist Lancers will open up their 2009 season at SCU. Similar to the Broncos, CBU has a young lineup with two upperclassmen, a senior and a junior. They have three sophomores and four freshmen rounding out their lineup.
Scouting No. 75 Cal Poly
Cal Poly opens up their dual season against Santa Clara. Last weekend they competed in the Cal Invitational in preparation for the regular season. This will be the second time SCU will face the Mustangs, as they took on Cal Poly during the fall. The Broncos fell in seven of the eight singles matches played and were swept in the four doubles contests. The Mustangs are the first ranked opponent Santa Clara will face this season.
