Broncos Blast UCSC in 7-0 Sweep

Jan. 17, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team breezed by UC Santa Cruz, 7-0, in their first dual match of the 2009 season. Led by senior's Stephanie Galainena and Myra Davoudi, the Broncos outplayed a gritty Banana Slug lineup.

"It was a great way to start the season," said head coach Ben Cabell. "We came out and had overall strong performances from the top to the bottom half of the lineup. Hopefully we can capitalize on the momentum from this win and use it this season."

Galainena led SCU at the No. 1 singles position, defeating Taylor Mannix, 6-3, 6-1.

"Today's match was a great win for us versus a good Santa Cruz team," said Galainena. "It was great to start the season on a winning note and to win my last first-match of my college career."

At the No. 2 spot Davoudi breezed by Kyle Kessler Rowe, 6-0, 6-1, and sophomore Carmen Pham rounded out the upper half of the SCU lineup with a win at the No. 3 position, 6-2, 6-4, over the Slugs Danielle Antoinette Burke.

Posting their first dual season collegiate win was freshman Kacie Wagner, who played at the No. 4 spot. Wagner was the only newcomer to the Bronco roster to play in today's match. She easily defeated UCSC's Chrissy Nichol, 6-0, 6-0, to post her first straight set win.

Rounding out the singles lineup were sophomores Ashley Pane and Courtney Hull, who both won their respective matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions in straight sets, as well.

Completing the Santa Clara sweep, the Broncos earned the doubles point with wins from the all three pairs.

SCU returns to the courts next week to take on Cal Baptist on Thursday, January 22, at 2 p.m.
