SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team returns to action this week with two road contests in Portland. The Broncos will face the Vikings of Portland State on Wednesday at 10 a.m., and then battle the Portland Pilots on Thursday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held on the campus of the University of Portland.
Last Time Out For The Broncos
In their lone match of the week, Santa Clara faced a hard-fought loss to Wyoming, 5-2, at Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos earned their two points at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Ashley Pane produced a straight set triumph over Sarah Summerfield at the No. 5 spot. The score was 6-4, 6-2. At the No. 3 spot, Myra Davoudi rallied to defeat Brown in a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (0) and then went on to storm through the second set, 6-0. Although the Cowgirls won the doubles points, Lindsay McBride and Carmen Pham teamed up to storm past Michelle Brown and Carly Van Hollen, 8-4.
On The Season
The Broncos enter the final week of March with a 3-10 overall record. The doubles pair of McBride and Pham improved their season record to 6-3, while Pane gets closer to .500 in singles action with a 10-13 mark.
Scouting Portland State
The Vikings enter the week with a 5-11 overall record after splitting last week's contests. Most recently, Portland State fell, 6-1, to Northern Colorado in Big Sky Conference action. Anya Dalkin registered the lone point for the Vikings at No. 4 singles.
Last Time Out vs. Portland State
Wednesday's contest is the first time under the direction of head coach Ben Cabell that the Broncos and Vikings will play each other.
The Pilots enter the week with a 9-6 record and have won four straight and seven of their last eight matches. Most recently, Portland defeated Idaho, 6-1, at home. Leading the way for the Pilots in singles play is Audree Jenks and Jenna Tanzer. Jenks is undefeated (5-0) at sixth singles, while Tanzer has compiled an 11-4 record playing at the No. 4-6 spots. In doubles action, two pairs are tied with a team-best 9-6 record. Tanzer and Stefanie Doolittle have produced the mark play at the No. 2 spot, while Jenks and Anna Gullickson registered the record at the No. 3 spot.
Last Time Out vs. Portland
The Broncos face the Pilots twice last season and split the matches. In the regular season, the Pilots defeated the Broncos 5-2 on March 24. Casey Knutson and Kimberly Daniel earned points for Santa Clara. The two teams then faced each other in the WCC Championships, with the Broncos posting a 4-2 victory. Knutson, Daniel and Erika Barnes registered singles points for SCU. The Broncos won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
The Broncos remain on the road and return to action on April 4 against the Bulldogs of Gonzaga. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
