Broncos Face Some Of Nation's Best At Cal Invitational

Berkeley, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis headed to Berkeley on Friday for the first day of the Cal Invitational. In their second tournament of the fall season, following last weekend's Fresno State Bulldog Classic, the Broncos sent six competitors to the courts at UC Berkeley, captains Casey Knutson and Myra Davoudi, along with Erika Barnes, Kim Daniel, Meghan Madden and Lindsay McBride. The tournament features some of the top talent in the nation, including the 2006 NCAA Singles Champions, Susie Babos and the 2006 Pac-10 Singles Champion, Zsuzsanna Fodor for Cal. In addition, members of the 2006 NCAA team champion, Stanford, are playing in the tournament. Two other competitors Fresno State and Arizona State finished the 2006 campaign in the top 25, coming in 20th and 24th, respectively. Long Beach State just missed the top 25, ending up No. 26.
Erika Barnes was the only Bronco to win her first round match, defeating San Francisco's Nisha Dixit 6-0, 7-5. Lindsay McBride did win a consolation round match agaist USF's Jessica Kapoor 6-0, 6-1, while Daniel and Davoudi teamed up to sweep a doubles consolation match 8-0 against Kelly Hickey and Lauren Hickey of USF.
