Bronco Briefs: A Look into the Life of Kelly Leathers

Kelly Leathers returns to the Santa Clara women's tennis team this season after a spectacular sophomore campaign. Playing at the No. 2 in the singles line-up for a majority of the 2004-05 season, the Sacramento, Calif. native posted a 20-7 record, while also earning 13 victories at the No. 1 doubles position. A hard worker on and off the court, Leathers was named the team's MVP at the conclusion of the year and was also selected as an All-West Coast Conference honorable mention. This season, the 5-7 righthander looks to make her mark on the Bronco record books, as she is just one win shy of breaking into the program's Top-10 career victory list in singles, accumulating 39 wins over her two years at the Mission Campus.

Get to know Leathers and the rest of the Broncos in her latest installment of Bronco Briefs.

Hey everyone! My name is Kelly Leathers and I am lucky to be the team captain of the Santa Clara Women's tennis team! So far this year, the Bronco ladies have had some serious fun. On the court we're all about working hard, and off the court we're definitely about having as much fun as possible. As we finish our third month of school, we already have a gazillion memories. I'll share some of our more memorable team stories with you so you can really get to know the Bronco ladies...

Our year began with Damon's version of Boot Camp practice/conditioning. We're talking 6:30 a.m. practices followed by another session at 10:30 a.m. Needless to say, it was a good bonding time for all of us - bonding over pain!! Once our two practices were over, some of us crawled to the pool for some good tanning sessions. We're all about the tanning oil, as Myra will confess. She got in trouble for staining our tennis courts with the excessive oil that she lathers onto her legs. At least she's the most tan out of all of us...

Our fall season kicked off with a road trip to Fresno, Calif. For those of you who have been to Fresno before, you know there isn't much to do there. Leave it to us to make our own fun. We all squished into one hotel room at night and giggled and chatted for hours. One night when we had the van (thanks Damon), we cruised to our usual hangout, TCBY, for frozen yogurt. Our team has an obsession with "fro yo," if I do say so myself. Maybe that's why we're all such good tennis players? After our excursion to TCBY, we drove by the fraternity houses at Fresno State busting some Mexican music in our minivan. I'm sure we impressed a few people.

We also like to impress people with our uniforms. It is the team's consensus that everyone's uniform tops look more like basketball jerseys. They're huge!! Cute, but huge. I'm sure we'll all be making trips to alterations over the holiday break.

Besides road trips, we love to hang out at school when we have the chance...and no early morning practices. Kim Daniel, Erika Barnes, and I threw a "P-Diddy White" theme party at our house. We danced the night away in our white outfits. Speaking of dancing, we have QUITE the dancer on our very own team! Ashley Lester brings much hip-hop flavor to our team with her amazing dance moves. She loves to bust them out during downtime at tournaments. We definitely got it on tape! Maybe I'll find a way to post it online!
