Women's Tennis Ends Fall Season with SCU Hidden Dual Challenge

Nov. 3, 2005

Santa Clara, Calif. - To wrap up the fall season, the Santa Clara women's tennis team will host a tournament that will gear them up for the team season, to begin in early January. Along with host Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, and San Jose State will travel to the mission campus to compete in the SCU Hidden Dual Challenge this Saturday and Sunday. Play will begin at 9 a.m. on both days.

"Teams will play singles against a school and doubles against a different school on the same day. This allows for matches not set in a full school vs. school atmosphere like the spring season," explained head coach Damon Coupe. "It's an opportunity for the teams to play more matches as the fall season comes to an end. Having it against the Bay Area schools adds a little more competition as coaches are allowed to size-up the competition."

This season, the Broncos are a nice mixture of experience and youth, with veteran players such as juniors Kelly Leathers, Kim Daniel and Erika Barnes competing for playing time, along with freshmen Stephanie Herrmann and Stephanie Galainena to challenge for a spot in the starting line-up. In addition, Coupe welcomes back redshirt junior Casey Knutson, who took last year off to heal some recurring injuries. With a squad bubbling with so much talent and potential, Santa Clara hopes to improve upon its stellar 16-7 season from a year ago and continue to make its mark in the always difficult West Coast Conference.

The Broncos' first official dual match will be against Cal Poly on January 22. Game time will be at noon and the contest will be held at the Degheri Tennis Center on the campus of Santa Clara University.
