Stanford, Calif. - While Friday did not prove to be a particularly successful day for the Santa Clara women's tennis team at the Wilson/ITA Regional Tournament, Saturday was a different story, as four players advanced to the third round of the singles consolation draw. The Broncos were led by Erika Barnes, who had a first round victory over Bay Area rival Joanna Kao of Stanford. Game scores were 7-6, 3-6, 1-0. Barnes received a bye in the second round to move on to Sunday's competition.
"Erika Barnes had a huge win, defeating Stanford's Joanna Kao in a tough three-set victory," said head coach Damon Coupe. "Joanna is a tough competitor who was in and out of the defending national champions' line-up last year. This was a giant victory for SCU to defeat a player from the best collegiate program in history."
Aside from Barnes, teammates Stephanie Galainena, Myra Davoudi, and Kim Daniel all advanced to the third round. Galainena won two matches to advance to play on Sunday, while Davoudi and Daniel won their matches in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.
In the main draw, Kelly Leathers fell in straight sets in the Round of 32 to end her tournament run.
Santa Clara returns to action on Sunday for the third day of the Wilson/ITA Regional Tournament.
