Davoudi and Knutson Earn All-WCC Honors

May 2, 2006

San Bruno, Calif. - Junior Casey Knutson and sophomore Myra Davoudi were recognized today by the West Coast Conference for their play in league action, as the WCC announced its all-conference teams today. Both Knutson and Davoudi picked up honorable mention honors to continue Santa Clara's streak of all-conference players, as this is the fifth consecutive year that Bronco players have earned accolades from the league.

Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru was voted the WCC Player of the Year, while Saint Mary's Erin Young was tabbed the WCC Freshman of the Year. The league's Coach of the Year honor was shared by Pepperdine's Gualberto Escudero and Loyola Marymount's Jamie Sanchez. Escudero led the Waves to their fourth straight conference crown and 18th overall, while Sanchez guided his team to the finals of the WCC Championships.

Dulgheru and two-time WCC Player of the Year recipient Emma Murphy highlighted the All-WCC First Team and for the first time in history, coaches selected a second team of players. Three different programs were represented on the First Team All-WCC doubles squad, with Pepperdine's No. 18 ranked duo of Merve Asimgil and Sylvia Kosakowski joining San Diego's No. 36-ranked pairing of Murphy and Lauren Perl on the team. Loyola Marymount's tandem of Robyn Baker and Pavla Mesterova were also named to the first team after earning a ranking of No. 50 earlier this week.

Knutson played her way to a 3-3 mark in conference play and an overall singles record of 11-9. During the dual match season, the Huntington Beach, Calif. native was a mainstay at the top-half of the singles ladder for the Broncos, with most of her success coming at the No. 3 spot. A 6-3, 6-3 win over Lindsey Griffin sealed Santa Clara's 4-1 victory over Portland. Among her top victories this season came against Joanna Macedo (San Francisco), Cristin Sammis (Portland), and Jolanta Twarowska (Pacific).

A local native out of San Jose, Calif., Davoudi earned a 4-2 record in the WCC while producing an even 11-11 mark overall in singles play this year. Davoudi did most of her damage at the No. 5 position, boasting a 5-3 record, but also had stints at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Her 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Carrie Schofield helped Santa Clara secure a 4-2 victory over Gonzaga at the WCC Championships.
