San Francisco Slips Past Santa Clara 4-3

Feb. 20, 2006

Santa Clara, Calif. - Juniors Casey Knutson and Kelly Leathers both won their matches in doubles and singles competition this afternoon, but it wasn't enough to propel the Santa Clara women's tennis team past West Coast Conference rival San Francisco, losing a close 4-3 decision at the Degheri Tennis Center.

The match opened up in Santa Clara's favor, with victories on Courts 1 and 3 to secure the doubles point. Casey Knutson and Kelly Leathers took out Joana Macedo and Camille Pamart 8-4 at the No. 1 position, while Erika Barnes and Stephanie Herrmann defeated Mylene Martin and Sarah Oudomvilay 8-5 at the No. 3 spot. USF's Jenny Sperry and Emma Taylor won on Court 2 over Myra Davoudi and Stephanie Galainena to avoid the sweep.

The Dons rebounded by taking the first three singles matches of the day, winning out at the No. 1, 4, and 6 positions. However, Knutson and Leathers tied up the contest at 3-3 with their three-set triumphs over their opponents. Knutson outlasted Macedo 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 on Court 3, while Leathers was up 4-1 in the third set when Taylor retired at the No. 2 spot. San Francisco got the clinching point after Martin gutted out a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Davoudi on Court 5, giving the visitors the 4-3 win.

Santa Clara drops its overall record to 3-7 and returns to action next Friday against UC Davis. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center.
