Women's Tennis Opens Action at SMC Invite

MORAGA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's tennis team opened play today at the sixth annual Saint Mary's Invitational at the Gaels' Korth Tennis Center in Moraga.
Newcomers Kelly Leathers, Kimberly Daniel and Erika Barnes won their opening matches. Leathers earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the round of 128 before earning a three-set victory over ninth seed Gabi Ruiz of San Francisco in the Round of 64. Daniel and Barnes received first-round byes, and also both took three-set victories in the Round of 64. All three Broncos fell in the Round of 32.
Doubles action begins on Saturday, while sophomore Kristen Ruso will compete in the consolation singles draw as well.
The tournament is hosting 90 singles players and 40 doubles tandems from the following schools: Air Force, California, Stanford, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Pacific, Santa Clara, UC Davis, Sonoma State, Nevada, San Francisco, Sacramento State and San Jose State.
The Saint Mary's College Invitational is the second largest collegiate tennis event in Northern California. The Broncos will remain at the Invitational through Sunday and will conclude their fall season the following week at the ITA Regional Championship, hosted by Stanford, Oct. 24-26.
