July 9, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's tennis program will have 5-7 right-hander Erika Barnes of Vista join the Bronco program, head coach Aby Ryan announced. Barnes will arrive on the Mission Campus this fall as a freshman and is the third and final anticipated newcomer.

Barnes will join Kelly Leathers of Sacramento and Kimberly Daniel of Edmonton, Alberta, as the Bronco class of 2007.

"I am happy to have another experienced Southern California player," Ryan said. "Erika brings years of tournament experience to our team from one of the best USTA sections in the country. I expect her to make an immediate impact in singles and doubles."

Barnes played No. 1 singles for Vista High School for three years and finished with a 183-18 record. She won the Palomar League Championship in 1999 and has been honored with All-League and team MVP honors. Advancing to the CIF playoffs every year, Barnes is a two-time San Diego doubles champion, while also playing fifth at the 2000 Copper Bowl.

Additionally, Barnes is ranked 34th in the Southern California doubles section, one of the strongest divisions in the country. In singles, she is listed 131st.

The Broncos finished their season in mid-April with a 10-10 record, and placed third at the West Coast Conference Championship, tying its highest finish ever, set during the 2002 season.
