SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match to Pacific 4-3 this afternoon at the SCU Tennis Center. The Broncos' record drops to 1-3, while the Tigers' record evens to 2-2.

Santa Clara secured its first doubles point of the season by winning two of the three matches. Partners Janalle Kaloi and Sofia Wendt topped Natalia Kostenko and Viktoria Hizo 8-5 on the second court to clinch the point, after the Bronco freshmen duo of Erika Barnes and Kelly Leathers put together an 8-4 win over Tigers Urska Dvorsek and Nicole Sakai.

In singles action, Jessie Strunk put the Broncos ahead 2-0 with her 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sakai. However, the Tigers struck back and recorded victories on courts two and four to even the team score at 2-2. Pacific continued its momentum and clinched the team victory with Katharina Heil's win over Kaloi, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court one.

After the match was already decided, Bronco Casey Knutson picked up her first win of the season in a super-tiebreak, besting Dvorsek 3-6, 7-5, (10-3).

"We are making improvements every time out," assistant coach Brett Masi said. "Individually, we can see the progress, despite the score. We just ran into some tough opponents today, as shown in the fact that four of our six singles matches went three sets."

The Broncos remain at home when they host UC Riverside Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
