STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman first baseman Lacey Smale drove in five runs as the Santa Clara University softball team defeated Sacramento City 12-0 this afternoon at the inaugural Stanford Fall Tournament at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Broncos concluded fall play after falling to host Stanford 3-1.

Smale went 3-3 in the morning contest with two doubles, as senior Deanna Rodriguez earned the win on the mound. Freshman Kelley Johnson also went 3-3 with two RBIs, as the game was stopped after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Smale added another RBI in the loss to the Cardinal, going 2-3 in the second game. Freshman pitcher Jennifer Ponzo went 2-3 but took the loss on the mound.

The Broncos open the season against Southwest Missouri State at the Cal Poly Tournament on February 8. The invitational will continue in San Luis Obispo through the weekend with Santa Clara also facing Colorado State, host Cal Poly, Southern Utah and UC Santa Barbara.
