Softball Shuts Out Saint Mary's
April 29, 2003
MORAGA, Calif. - Junior Jaime Forman-Lau pitched a no-hitter to lead the Santa Clara University softball team to a 2-0 victory over Saint Mary's this evening. Santa Clara won the second contest 3-0 to complete the Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader at Cottrell Field. Santa Clara remains in first place in league play with an 11-3 record, and improves to 29-22 overall. Saint Mary's evens its mark to 23-23, 5-9 in the PCSC. Forman-Lau pitched both contests, walking one batter in each. She struck out 17 total, and allowed two hits in the second game. She is now 20-11 on the season. The Broncos' first run came early, as third baseman Vanessa Werner reached on an error and managed to score on the same play, as the ball rolled all the way to the right field fence. The team's second run came in the fifth inning, when designated player Rachel Sherman drove in outfielder Coresta Salas, who tripled one at bat earlier. Despite the loss, Gael hurler Jennifer Eaton (12-11) carried a no-hitter into the fifth before surrendering a hit. The Broncos finished with four in the outing. Game two was a pitcher's duel until the sixth frame, when Santa Clara strung together a few hits and left the inning with a three-run advantage. Freshman second baseman Jenny Brown posted the game-winning RBI, as well as a few insurance runs, as she drove in three runs on a two-out double. SMC's Jordan Larsen (10-11) took the loss, allowing eight hits and no earned runs.
The Broncos continue PCSC play with two doubleheaders at Portland State this weekend. Games will be played on Saturday and Sunday at Erv Lind Stadium with first pitches at noon on each day.
