ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On day two of the Lobo Classic, Santa Clara softball earned a split. The Broncos beat Stony Brook 6-4 but fell to New Mexico 7-3.
After both teams put up two runs in the first, Santa Clara (5-12) scored once in the second and three times in the third for all the offense the Broncos would need.
Amanda Delfino was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the third and Geenamarie Bonilla roped a double to left center to bring in a run. After a single by Kelsie Barnard, an error brought Bonilla around to score. Ellie Fisher came through with a two-out RBI single to make it 6-2 Santa Clara.
Bonilla led the Bronco offense by going 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Eleni Spirakis added two hits, a run, and an RBI and Fisher had an RBI and scored a run.
Ciara Gonzalez (1-4) started for Santa Clara and picked up the win in 5 innings. She allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Aubree Kim got her first career save in 2 innings.
Stony Brook (1-9) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh behind a hit and two walks to put the tying run on base. Riley Craig hit a sacrifice fly to right to cut the deficit to 6-4 but Chelsea Evans was gunned down trying to make it to third to end the game.
Jourdin Hering and Evans both picked up two hits to lead the Seawolves offense. Hering scored two runs and Evans scored one run with an RBI and a double.
Alex Petrolia (0-2) got the loss in 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for Stony Brook. She allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits.
Santa Clara (5-13) was able to score single runs in the first and third but in the bottom of each inning, New Mexico (12-10) answered with a pair of runs.
After Hannah Russell's RBI double in the third, Lobos starter Tess McPherson (5-4) retired the next 10 Broncos and allowed her team to get on top 7-2 with single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
McPherson went the distance for the win. She allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Jasmine Casados led the Lobos offense with two hits, including a home run, a walk, three RBIs, and a run scored. Michala Erickson was 1-for-2 with a home run, a run scored, and two RBIs and D'Andra DeFlora was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
An error ended the streak of batters retired to lead off the seventh for Santa Clara. Bonilla and Kelsie Barnard both put up spirited at-bats but went down for the first two outs of the inning. Taylor Burns singled to right to bring in a run and Adele Elkind followed with a walk but Ellie Fisher grounded out to end the game.
Fisher was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Russell had a double and an RBI to lead the Broncos.
Micaela Vierra (2-5) started for Santa Clara and picked up the loss. In 3 innings she allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits with three walks.
The Broncos play Stony Brook tomorrow at 9 a.m. and New Mexico at 11:30 a.m. on the final day of the Lobo Classic.
