SCU Softball, Head Coach Lisa Mize Announce Signing of Arizona Standout Ciara Gonzales
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara University and head softball coach Lisa Mize have received a signed National Letter of Intent from Ciara Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz./Mountain Pointe High School), an all-league pitcher and infielder from the Phoenix, Ariz. area. Gonzales will attend the University beginning in the fall of 2012 and play for the Broncos in 2013.
"Ciara is a movement pitcher and has a good mix of pitches in her arsenal that will make her very effective against opposing batters," said Mize. "Ciara will be a welcomed arm in the circle and will be an added compliment to our pitching staff. We are elated to have Ciara be a Santa Clara Bronco!"
The East Valley Tribune named Gonzales an all-league honoree as a prep junior. She was also selected as a First Team All-East Valley Region player and named First Team Tempe All-City. Gonzales has followed up that campaign with an outstanding senior season, which has seen her hit .437 and post a .718 slugging percentage. Gonzales throws right-handed and bats left.
Not only has Gonzales excelled on the diamond, her academic achievements include a top 5 ranking in her high school class, National Hispanic Merit Scholar honors, member of the National Honor Society and National Language Honor Society membership.
"I loved the atmosphere surrounding the University and l feel like I can challenge myself both as a student and as an athlete during my four years there," Gonzales stated.
Mize and the Broncos continue to add talent to the team's roster, having brought in 10 new players prior to the 2012 season. Gonzales adds to a 2013 class that already includes infielder Casandra Padilla (San Gabriel Valley, Calif./Bishop Amat High School) and catcher Chiara Biagini (Santa Clara, Calif./Archbishop Mitty High School).
Biagini and her Archbishop Mitty Monarchs are off to a 17-2 start this spring and are ranked No. 15 nationally by MaxPreps.com. Biagini was an All-Western Catholic Athletic League player as both a sophomore and junior.
Padilla is having another all-league season at Bishop Amat, a program ranked among the nation's top 100 by MaxPreps.com. The middle-infielder is hitting .321 through 19 games this season, with 11 RBI and 16 runs scored. Padilla was named the Del Rey League MVP as a junior, First Team All-Del Rey League and a San Gabriel First Team All-Valley player.
