Seattle Rallies Twice to Beat Santa Clara Softball In Extras
MORAGA, Calif. – Santa Clara University's softball team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Seattle University at the PCSC Crossover Tournament Friday morning, when the Redhawks rallied to tie the game with two outs in the seventh, then scored two runs in extra innings to walk-off with a 3-2 victory in the weekend-opener for both clubs.
Santa Clara (1-12) had taken a 1-0 lead when Kelly Scribner's double scored Jamie Wallis from first. In the meantime, freshman starter Jaymi Bautista-Geiger (0-3) threw six scoreless innings before Seattle (1-5) rallied to tie the game with two outs in the seventh.
Bautista-Geiger was throwing a three-hit shutout heading to the bottom of the seventh with the 1-0 advantage. With two outs and Ashley DeVaere standing on second base, after drawing a one-out walk, Brianna Guerrero came up with a pinch-hit single to send the game into extra innings.
Wallis singled-home Briana Knight in SCU's half of the eighth to give the Broncos back the lead at 2-1. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Redhawks came up with two runs, capped off by Sarah Petosa's game-deciding RBI-double, making a winner of reliever Richelle Ashburn (1-0).
In the Broncos second game of the day, Portland State (5-6) totaled 18 hits and scored in all but one inning to post an 8-3 win. Freshman lefty Briana Rios (0-3) took the loss for Santa Clara, allowing six hits and three runs in two innings.
