SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Coming off their first win of the season, the Santa Clara softball team will travel to UC Davis on Wednesday, February 25, to battle the Aggies at 2 p.m. The Broncos were originally scheduled to take on UCD in a doubleheader, but due to scheduling changes SCU will only play Davis in one game Wednesday afternoon.
Last Time Out
The Broncos enter this weeks competition after posting their first win of the season over CSU Bakersfield on February 22, in Bakersfield, Calif. SCU came back after three straight losses during the weekend to defeat the Roadrunners in the back-and-forth game, 8-5. Santa Clara, 1-4 overall, broke their four-game losing streak behind the bat of freshman outfielder Briana Knight. Knight, who boasts a .357 batting average for sixth best in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC), led the SCU offense with three RBIs and a home run over CSUB.
During their two day stint in Bakersfield, Santa Clara fell, 9-5, to University of Pacific and twice to Bakersfield, 7-5, and, 8-2. The rebuilding Bronco squad saw many bright spots throughout the weekend, as several players made career firsts. Knight hit her first and second career home runs versus Bakersfield and junior transfer Megan Smith, not only scored the game-winning run versus CSUB, but also hit her first career triple. Pitcher Lauren Passafuime earned her first win of the season and her second career win over the weekend, as well.
Knight Starts Career With a Bang!
PCSC top performer honoree, freshman Briana Knight only began her collegiate softball career five games ago, but is already making her mark in the Santa Clara lineup. The Bronco outfielder, who has started in all five contests this season, hit her first and second career home runs this past weekend versus CSU Bakersfield. In 14 at bats this season she posts six RBIs, five hits, four runs and two doubles. The Fairfield, Calif. native is statistically ranked in five PCSC categories, and leads the league with .929 slugging percentage and sacrifice flies with two.
Passafuime Throws Second Career Win
Junior pitcher Lauren Passafuime earned her second career win versus CSU Bakersfield on February 22. The Soquel, Calif. native, who was recognized by the PCSC this week as a top performer, is 1-1 this season. In 5.2 innings pitched, she has three strikeouts and is tied for fifth in wins in the conference.
Scouting UC Davis
The UC Davis Aggies enter this weeks game with a, 7-3 overall record. UCD, who has won their last two games, returns home after a weekend doubleheader at Saint Mary's. Davis edged the Gaels, 1-0, in the early game, and soundly defeated SMC, 11-0, on February 21. Leading the Aggies this season is Kelly Harman, who has a .393 batting average in 10 starts. The Davis shortstop posts 11 hits, eight RBIs, eight runs and three home runs. Pitcher Jessica Hancock has four wins in five starts this season. In 34.0 innings pitched, Hancock has a 0.82 ERA, 48 strikeouts and two shutouts.
