SANTA CLARA, Calif. - This weekend, Santa Clara (4-33) will head to Los Angeles to open up their conference season against Loyola Marymount (24-11). The Broncos will play two double-headers against the Lions on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6. Last season the Broncos went 5-15 in PCSC play.
One week ago, the Broncos dropped two one-run games in a double-header against UC Riverside at home, 8-7 and 5-4. Then this past Tuesday, Santa Clara fell to Cal State Bakersfield 8-2 and 7-5, the latter in which the Broncos lost a four run lead in the sixth inning.
Comebacks Fall Short
In the games against Riverside, the Broncos scored five seventh inning runs in the first game, almost mounting a gigantic comeback. In the second game, the two final inning runs fell just short of another comeback. Those seven runs that Santa Clara amassed in the seventh inning accounted for almost half of the year's total for the team.
Freshman Jackie Nicora belted her first collegiate homerun in the second game against Bakersfield on Tuesday, giving the Broncos a 5-1 lead in the game.
Noelani Ho'opi'i has an on base percentage of .405 so far this year, good for ninth in the PCSC. Maggie Godfrey's four home runs this year place her ninth in the PCSC as well. Jerrica Castagno and Jackie Morales are eighth and ninth respectively in the PCSC in strikeouts with 45 and 44.
