Fresno, Calif. -- Following an impressive win against Rhode Island to open the Fresno State Bulldog Classic, Santa Clara (4-21) fell to undefeated No. 14 Houston (15-0) by the score of 4-0 on the second day of the tournament. Jerrica Castagno (2-8) took the complete game loss.
Castagno only gave up one unearned run in the first five innings. Although giving up 12 hits throughout the game, she got herself out of jam after jam, including a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the third. Castagno would give up two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh in a valiant effort.
Houston's pitching shut down Santa Clara for the most part during the game. Freshman Jeanine Ruffoni went 2-for-3, but Breann Netto managed the team's only other hit. The Broncos were able to advance a runner past second base just once when Noelani Ho'opi'i threatened in the final inning, but was unable to score.
Santa Clara will play in their second game of the day at 3:00 p.m. when they take on DePaul. The game can be seen on Gametracker.
