Fresno, Calif. - On the first day of the Fresno State Bulldog Classic, Santa Clara softball (4-20) got off to a hot start, defeating Rhode Island (1-5) 5-1 on Thursday afternoon. Jackie Morales (2-6) got the win, giving up one run on seven hits over seven innings while notching six strikeouts. Morales also helped herself on offense with three RBIs.
The Broncos started off the game with a two out rally after a Noelani Ho'opi'i single to center. Then after Maggie Godfrey reached on an error, Amanda Edmonson doubled to left, scoring Ho'opi'i before Godfrey was tagged out at home.
Morales got into trouble early, giving up two singles to start the game, but retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.
Then in the fourth, Santa Clara loaded the bases for Morales, who came through with a bases clearing hit to put the Broncos up 4-0.
Morales gave up her only run in the sixth on a one-out double, but settled down and retired the last two batters of the inning to get out relatively unscathed.
Santa Clara added an insurance run in the seventh off of a Godfrey single, but they would not need it as Morales forced a game ending double play in the seventh to seal the win.
Ho'opi'i, Godfrey, and Edmonson all had two hits for the Broncos on the day.
Santa Clara will play twice on Friday as they face Houston at 11:00 a.m. and DePaul at 3:00 p.m.
