Santa Clara Softball Drops A Pair To UC Davis
March 4, 2008
Davis, Calif.- Jerrica Castagno pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits, but it was not enough as Santa Clara (3-20) fell 1-0 in the second game of the double header at UC Davis (12-11). The Broncos lost the first game 10-2.
In the first game of the double header, The Broncos took an early 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly by Amanda Edmonson in the top of the first inning, and the score remained that way into the third.
UC Davis broke through with six runs in their half of the third. Deanna Menapace started the scoring with a bases-leaded, one-out RBI-single off of Jackie Morales to tie the game at 1-1. The next batter, Ashley Johnson, was hit by a pitch as Holmes scored to put the Aggies in front, 2-1. The next run scored on a fielder's choice before two more scored on an error to make it 5-1. The Aggies took a 6-1 lead on an RBI-groundout.
After the third, Lauren Passafuime came in to pitch and gave up two runs in the fourth and then two more in the sixth to end the game with the Broncos trailing by eight.
In the second game of the double header, after recording two outs to start the second inning, Castagno gave up a single and then a double to score the run. It would be her only mistake of the game as she shut out Davis for the rest of the game.
Unfortunately for Santa Clara, Jessica Hancock of UC Davis scattered just three hits over seven innings, not allowing a run. Ruffoni again went 1-for-2, batting .500 on the day. Noelani Ho'opi'i and Edmonson had the other two hits for the Broncos, each with a 1-for-3 game.
Santa Clara will battle Rhode Island on Thursday in Fresno, Calif. at 2 p.m.
