San Luis Obispo, Calif.- The Santa Clara softball team is still looking for their first win of the season after falling to Sacramento State 8-5 in the first game of the 2008 Cal Poly Mustang Classic. Maggie Godfrey went 2-4 in the game with a three-run homerun. Kaitlyn Rauschnot took the loss after pitching just 1.2 innings.
In the first game against PCSC member Sacramento State, the Broncos started off strong with a leadoff single from Breann Netto. Netto got caught stealing, but the Broncos loaded the bases with two outs thanks to a pair of walks and a single by Godfrey. However, a fielder's choice by Emily Batt ended the inning.
Sac State shot off to a big lead in the second however, when they loaded the bases with just one out. A single, sacrifice fly, and bases clearing double later and they found themselves out in front 5-0. Jackie Morales entered the game for Rauschnot and promptly retired a batter to end the inning.
Santa Clara started to mount their comeback in the third when Godfrey knocked out a three run homerun, her third of the season. The Broncos were not able to score any more in that inning, but in the fourth, Meghan Chavez led off with a walk. After two batters moved her around to third with two outs, Chavez took off and stole home to bring the score to 5-4.
Sacramento State would pull ahead again later that inning though, with two walks and a pair of doubles that scored three and brought the score to 8-4.
Neither team was able to do much the next two innings, but in the seventh, Noelani Ho'opi'i tried to get the ralley going with a one-out solo shot down the right field line, her second of the year. Ashley Blier tried to keep things going with a two out single, but Nicole Picard went down swinging to end the game 8-5.
Santa Clara faces host Cal Poly in the final game of the first day at 8 p.m.
