Late Inning Ralley by Stanford Sinks Santa Clara

Feb. 16, 2008

Stanford, Calif.-- After throwing 1.1 innings earlier in the morning, Jerrica Castagno effectively held Stanford to just one run and one hit through five innings before an explosive sixth inning by the Cardinals led to an 8-0 loss for Santa Clara.

Pitching against undefeated Stanford, Castagno was working on a gem, tossing a no-hitter until two outs into the fourth inning Michelle Smith homered to break up the no-no and the shutout.

The floodgates opened in the sixth however, when a fatigued Castagno gave up two hits, loaded the bases with a walk, then walked in a run. Jackie Morales was given the job of cleaning up the bases loaded situation with no outs. She walked in a run before giving up a two-run single. Two outs later two more singles scored two more runs, effectively ending the game with Stanford leading by eight after six innings.

Santa Clara managed three hits and none after the first two innings. Amanda Edmonson, Ashley Blier, and Ashley Grove all had hits in the game.

Santa Clara will face the loser of the Wichita State-Pacific matchup tomorrow at 10 a.m. to determine third place at the Stanford Invitational.
