The Santa Clara softball team will travel to Stanford to take part in the Stanford Invitational. On Friday, Feb. 15 they will take on Pacific at 12 p.m. and then host Stanford at 2 p.m. The on Saturday they will start their day with Wichita State at noon. There will be one more game on Saturday and one on Sunday to be determined.
The Broncos had a rough start to their season, going 0-5 in the Fullerton/UCLA Tournament last weekend. They dropped their first game to No. 21 Cal State Fullerton 7-3 on Friday. Then on Saturday they lost to UC Santa Barbara 8-6 and No. 10 UCLA 27-1. On Sunday they closed out the weekend with an 8-0 loss to Nevada and a rematch loss to Fullerton 7-0.
After a 3-hit performance against Fullerton on Friday, the Broncos came out swinging in Saturday's first game against UC Santa Barbara. After falling behind 6-0, the team rallied. Freshman Amanda Edmonson started the fourth inning with a solo homerun to left field. Then after Jenna Fong walked and with two outs, Noelle Ho'opi'i came through with a two-run homerun. Although the Broncos ultimately fell short, Edmonson finished 3-4 with a homerun, a double, and 3 RBIs, Ho'opi'i went 2-3 with a homerun, Maggie Godfrey went 2-2 with an RBI, and Megan Chavez finished 2-3.
With powerhouse UCLA looking to no-hit the Broncos and shut them out, Maggie Godfrey stepped up to the plate in the fourth inning with two outs and hit a bomb to centerfield that nobody was going to catch, simultaneously ending the Bruins quest for a combined no-hitter and a shutout.
Jerrica Castagno, one of the team's top pitchers, is still questionable for this upcoming weekend. She missed all five games last weekend with the flu and a rib injury.
