Stockton, Calif. - The season opener for the Santa Clara softball team did not go as planned, as they dropped a pair of games to the University of the Pacific this afternoon. In the first contest, senior Shannon Linerud had a pair of hits to lead the Broncos in a 4-0 defeat and in the following game, sophomore Ashley Blier had two hits and one RBI in a 12-4 loss to the Tigers.
In the first game, Pacific went on an offensive binge in the second inning, gathering three hits and scoring three runs to take the lead that it would never relinquish. The Tigers added an insurance run in the fifth inning after Broncos pitcher Jackie Morales gave up a homerun. Morales (0-1) took the loss, while Briana Santos picked up the win. In total, Santa Clara had six hits, with Linerud with two and Jessica Clee, Ashley Blier, Sara Overmier, and Jillian Cassel adding one hit of their own.
In the second game, Santa Clara got on the board first in the second inning. After Linerud walked to first, she advanced to second base off of a sacrifce bunt by Kate Goethals. Linerud reached third base thanks to a single by Bliers. Brittany Pucci, a pinch runner for Bliers, stole second and Linerud stole home, giving her team an early 1-0 lead.
However, the lead was short-lived, as SCU pitcher Jerrica Castagno gave up three hits which led to two runs for the Tigers and it was a lead the home team would never give up. Although Santa Clara scored again in the fourth inning and twice more in the fifth, Pacific proved to be too strong at the plate, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning. Castagno (0-1) took the loss for the Broncos, while Chelsea Engle picked up her first win of the season.
Santa Clara falls to 0-2 on the year and returns to the plate tomorrow when it travels to Davis, Calif. to take on UC Davis in another doubleheader. Game time is set to begin at noon.
