LOS ANGELES - Santa Clara University junior softball players Jessica Clee and Liz Courter were named Players of the Week by the Pacific Coast Softball Conference for outstanding performances this past weekend against UC Riverside and St. Francis. Clee, an outfielder from Millbrae earned Player of the Week honors and Courter, a pitcher from Phoenix, Ariz., was named the league's Pitcher of the Week.
This honor marks the first for both players this season and the third career honor for Clee, who twice received the weekly recognition in 2004.
Clee started all four games this past week in the outfield, and batted .583 behind a 7-for-12 performance. In the first game against St. Francis, she had a double, a triple and a home run, accounting for 5 of her 8 RBIs on the weekend. In fact, Clee hit three homers last week and registered six runs and a .615 on base percentage.
Courter threw two complete games, posting a shut out against the Terriers and concluding the weekend with a 0.00 ERA. She struck out 12, including a 10K outing against St. Francis for her seventh win of the season. She held opponents to a .189 batting average, only walking four opponents and allowing 10 hits. Offensively, Courter led the team with a .667 batting average, including a 3-for-3 performance on Friday. She even stole home for the Broncos' final run of the day.
Santa Clara, 15-16, returns to action next week with three home contests at Marsalli Park. SCU will host Brown on Wednesday at 1 p.m., and then follow with the Pacific Coast Softball Conference opener against Sacramento State during the weekend. Admission is free to all contests.
