FRESNO, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team defeated Kent State 7-2 at the Bulldog Classic, but fell to host and 19th-ranked Fresno State 8-1. The games move the Broncos' record to 10-10 on the season.
The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 in tournament play after freshman left hander Amanda Nesbitt scattered five hits, walked three and struck out seven to improve to 3-0 overall. Fresno State notched 11 hits, and opened the game with back-to-back home runs by Clark and Jaime Southern. The Bulldogs scored three more runs in the third and sixth innings as three players had multi-hit performances.
Santa Clara scored its run in the bottom of the fifth and finished with five hits. Short stop Shannon Linerud started the frame with a single to right field and quickly stole second. She advanced to third on outfielder Jillian Cassel's single and then scored on a Bulldog error. Also in the inning, second baseman Jenny Brown hit a two-out double to center field.
Jerrica Castagno took the loss for the Broncos in the circle.
The Broncos fared better against Kent State, taking a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second and adding four runs in the sixth. Santa Clara posted nine hits, including three from Cassel and a three-run homer by Jessica Clee. Liz Courter struck out five in the complete game victory.
Santa Clara will close out participation in the event against defending national champion and fourth-ranked UCLA at 11 a.m. and Mississippi at 1 p.m.
