FRESNO, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team defeated St. John's this morning in the second game of the Bulldog Classic at Fresno State. The 2-1 decision evened the Broncos' record at 9-9, while the Red Storm fell to 6-6.
The Broncos took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior second baseman Jenny Brown led off with a double to center field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman Vanessa Werner. Two batters later, another double by catcher Kate Goethals drove in the run.
St. John's had an opportunity to score in the top of the third inning, but left the bases loaded. The Red Storm evened the score, however, in the top of the fourth. Allina Sainz led off the inning with a single to center field and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Leigh Carlson.
The Broncos answered with what proved to be the game-deciding run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Left fielder Jillian Cassel doubled to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Keri Reisinger. Cassel scored on a Red Storm throwing error.
Along with the three Santa Clara doubles, the Broncos had two singles in the third inning by outfielder Jessica Clee and designated hitter Maggie Godfrey. Jerrica Castagno allowed only three hits in the contest and earned the win for the Broncos. Lisa Geer took the loss for St. John's.
Santa Clara will continue action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest against 19th-ranked Fresno State and a 7 p.m. meeting with Kent State. On Sunday, the Broncos will close out participation in the event against defending national champion and fourth-ranked UCLA at 11 a.m. and Mississippi at 1 p.m.
