Softball Splits at NIST

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team defeated San Jose State 3-0 in the morning game of the 18th Annual National Invitational Softball Tournament at Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale. Santa Clara fell 3-1 against Sacramento State in the afternoon contest. The Broncos are now 8-17 on the season.
In the morning game against San Jose State, Santa Clara scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth off a total of nine hits. Sophomore Shannon Linerud recorded a two-out triple to right center driving in two runs. Sophomore Kate Goethals followed up with a single to bring in Linerud for the Broncos three runs of the game. Senior Vanessa Werner and junior Keri Reisinger each went 2-for-3.
Jaime Forman-Lau recorded the win for Santa Clara, striking out 13. Her record moves to 7-11.
In the afternoon game, Sacramento State took the early lead over the Broncos scoring three runs in the first two innings of the game. Santa Clara put a run on the board in the bottom of the fifth as they battled back. Sophomore Jenny Brown was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Forman-Lau recorded the loss in the second game. She concluded the day 7-12.
Santa Clara will return to action tomorrow as they take on Virginia in their final game of the NIST. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m.
